Suzanne Collins’ best-selling post-apocalyptic book series The Hunger Games is making a comeback in the next decade. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Collins announced that she is expected to return with a new untitled novel that will serve as a prequel to the original trilogy, set 64 years before the events of Jennifer Lawrence’s character Katniss Everdeen.
“With this book, I wanted to explore the state of nature, who we are and what we perceive is required for our survival,” Collins stated. Collins expressed that the story would cover the war period known as the “Dark Days” as a pre-divided Panem struggles to stay afloat.
Lionsgate, which distributed the Hunger Game films, hinted at the potential of a prequel film with a statement from vice chairman Michael Burns. According to the Associated Press, Burns said that the studio “could hardly wait for Suzanne’s next book to be publish” and that “we look forward to continuing to work closely with her on the movie.” Lionsgate did not confirm whether or not a deal was in place for potential film rights.
The Hunger Games‘ first three books were critically-acclaimed at the time of their release and quickly transpired into a multi-million series. The most recent film, Mockingjay – Part 2, was released in 2015 and served as a definitive end to the film series.
