In separate interviews X-Men: Days of Future Past star Hugh Jackman and writer Simon Kinberg discussed what they would like to see in future X-Men films. Jackman went back on earlier statement that he was thinking of giving up the part of Wolverine, while Kinberg contemplated a crossover with the Fantastic Four.
Originally, Hugh Jackman had hinted last year’s The Wolverine would be the last film in which he would play the most famous X-Man. In an interview with The Vulture on Thursday, he said that he had reconsidered somewhat since he felt the films were improving. Said Jackman, “I feel like the scripts and story lines are getting better and better. So I’m not going to do it unless we stay on that trajectory.” Jackman is currently working with director James Mangold on a followup to The Wolverine, but will not commit until he has a chance to go over the script. Jackman is also aware that playing Wolverine requires a very muscular physique and as he put it, “there is a use-by date to all this stuff.”
Meanwhile, Kinberg in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter said of a possible crossover with the Fantastic Four,
I would say purely as a fan of comics and these film franchises, I would love to see it, but it has challenges.” The film rights to both the X-Men and the Fantastic Four are currently owned by Fox and Simon Kinberg has writing duties for both franchises so he is in prime position to make such an event happen. However, Kinberg went on to point out, “The Fantastic Four live in a world where they are fantastic because they are the only people who have super powers… In the X-Men movies, we have never acknowledged a public team of superheroes called the Fantastic Four who live in New York City.
This is not the first time that rumors of a crossover have emerged and with Marvel still flying high with its Cinematic Universe, the potential must seem tempting. It seems that no such film is in the work at this time but it remains a possibility.
