After the successful release of Iron Lung, and the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie, video game movies are back to being a hot commodity for the box office. Among the slate of movies based on games that audiences can look forward to is 2027’s Helldivers, which just brought on its leading talent in the form of Jason Momoa.
Helldivers first hit the scene in 2015, and immediately became a hit. With a massive playerbase and huge following, the game spawned a sequel in 2024 that launched immediately into popularity, winning multiple awards including Best Ongoing Game and Best Multiplayer Game at the 2024 Game Awards. We’ve reported on multiple additions to the game that still continue to populate the game, and even a version of the game released that minimized the storage capacity needed to run it.
Momoa joining the crew will add another starring role in a movie based on a video game to his career. Just last year he headlined A Minecraft Movie alongside Jack Black, based on the immensely popular Minecraft. The film would go on to be a massive hit, grossing just shy of $1 billion, and greenlighting a sequel for 2027. Other roles Momoa has become known for include Aquaman in the DCEU, Duncan Idaho in Dune, and Kahl Drogo from HBO’s Game Of Thrones.
Hollywood Reporter notes that Justin Lin will be directing the film, with a script written by Gary Dauberman.
