Has the Release Date for James Cameron’s ‘Avatar 2’ Been Set?

According to Deadline, last week 20th Century Fox released what appears to be release date changes for a number of films. At the top of the list is an untitled film from James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment on Dec. 21, 2018. Yes, that’s right, that date right there could possibly be for the highly anticipated follow-up to 2009’s game-changer, Avatar. The reasoning behind this speculation is pretty firm if you remember James Cameron’s announcement from CinemaCon. Cameron said the sequel would hit theaters Christmas two years from now with three more films in 2020, 2022, and 2023. It does seem to add up pretty well. It’s worth noting that the only other major studio with that release date is an animated Spider-Man movie from Sony. Not much room for complaints here, just imagine a Spider-Man film and an Avatar film in the same weekend. Hooray!

In addition, two untitled Marvel films appeared on the release schedule for the dates, Nov. 2, 2018, and Feb. 14, 2019. Fox also removed an untitled Marvel movie from Oct. 6, 2017. So now, the total Marvel slots add up to four alongside March 2, 2018, and June 29, 2018. Last week, John Wick co-director David Leitch signed on for Deadpool 2 and the start of production is expected to be announced soon, so Deadpool 2 will probably be placed on one of those dates.

Finally, the follow-up to Prometheus, Alien Covenant has been moved up three months, from August 4, 2017 to May 19.
