Halsey To Star In & Co-Write Horror ‘Replacer’, Partner Avan Jogia To Direct

Halsey in 'MaXXXine'

In what is being described as a psycho-sexual horror filmReplacer is set to launch at this week’s Cannes market. American pop musician, and recent budding thespian, Halsey, is set to star in the film and co-write alongside her long term partner, actor/filmmaker Avan Jogia. Jogia, who describes the film as an “electric club horror mashed together with a vulnerable romantic story”, is also announced to pen the script alongside Halsey.

The synopsis for Replacer is as follows:

“Stranded in Montreal, Proxy (Halsey), a troubled DJ, meets an alluring artist and his group of friends who run an underground radio station. The station’s broadcast becomes warped by a mysterious signal hidden deep beneath the city’s subway system. Proxy must escape before the sound turns her, and her new friends, into something raw, primal, and unrecognizable.”

The Grammy nominated Halsey, birth name Ashley Frangipane, has recently made a step from the sonic world to the silver screen, since 2018, she’s had acting credits in projects including A Star is Born, MaXXXine, and Americana. Avan Jogia is no stranger to acting himself, having a main role on Nickelodeon’s musical sitcom Victorious and is set to appear in A24’s upcoming analog horror film Backrooms. The pair also have credits on the 2026 comedy Our Hero, Balthazar; Halsey takes a producing role while Jogia makes an appearance in the film.

Lilly Wachiowski will serve as executive-producer on Replacer. Wachowski commented:

“Avan and Halsey’s script is a surreal hyper-dive into a twitchy, conspiratorial genre mashing snarl of horror/thriller/comedy, set against the grit and grime of a rarely glimpsed Montreal subculture. This thing is packed! I have the sense that Avan’s eyeballs have gulped down a steady diet of the films I grew up on — David Cronenberg, Alex Cox, Tony Scott, John Carpenter. Anarchists United is beyond excited to join the Replacer team and bring this super cool story to the screen!”
