Gunpowder & Sky’s company Dust has acquired the rights to Tom Lowe’s (Visitors) upcoming documentary Awaken. The documentary will be executive produced by Terrence Malick (Badlands, The Tree of Life, The Thin Red Line) and Godfrey Reggio (Koyaanisqatsi), while being narrated by Liv Tyler (Lord of the Rings). This will be Lowe’s first feature film, which he also produced and served as the cinematographer.
According to Deadline, Awaken explores the human relationship with technology and the natural world, while shot over a five-year period of time. Lowe visits over 30 countries to explore humanity, while using revolutionary camera techniques such as time-lapse, slow-motion, and underwater cinematography.
Janet Brown, Executive Vice President of Global Distribution and Commercial Operations, Gunpowder & Sky describes the documentary as, “…a celebration of the spirit of life, and of humanity’s relationship with technology and the natural world, which is exactly the type of film we seek for Dust. Lowe, Malick, Reggio and Trapanese are all juggernauts in their respective industries, and together, they delivered a truly stunning, exceptional film. We can’t wait to share it with the world”.
Although this is Lowe’s first feature film, he is well-known for his 2012 short film Timescapes and was named Astronomy Photographer of the Year by the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. He has also been second-unit director for Malick (Voyage of Time) and Reggio (Visitors).
Awaken is set to premiere on Apple TV, Amazon and all other major VOD platforms on April 9th.
