In a Deadline exclusive, it was announced that Greenwich Entertainment (Echo in the Canyon) acquired the North American distribution rights to Moby Doc, directed by Rob Bralver. The documentary focuses on the early life and stardom of rock-turned-electronic musician Moby. The seven-time Grammy nominee plays a major part in the film’s production, acting as narrator and executive-producer on what has been described as a “surrealist biographical documentary” (Deadline). The feature will include both archival and concert footage, event re-enactments, and interviews with the likes of David Bowie, David Lynch and Shepard Fairey. It is speculated that major moments from Moby’s past two memoirs, Porcelan: A Memoir and Then It Fell Apart will be included in Moby Doc.
Regarding his life’s documentation, Moby says, “Rob and I had two goals. The first was to make a truly unique music film and the second was to make a film that’s unabashedly honest and vulnerable.” The film will discuss his musical beginnings with hardcore rock band Vatican Commandos, his venture into EDM and Alternative stylings, and his uber successful albums like Moby (1992) and Play (1999), a record which had every song licensed to either film, TV or commercials. Tender subjects such as a traumatic upbringing and battles with addiction will also be addressed.
Docu director Rob Bralver has both a collaborative history with Moby and experience documenting the music scene. He has directed several of Moby’s music shorts including Moby: The Sorrow Tree (2018), This Wild Darkness (2018) and Like a Motherless Child (2017), as well as co-wrote and produced LA record label docu Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton: This is Stones Throw Records (2013).
Moby Doc is produced by Bralver, Jeff Broadway (Our Vinyl Weighs Ton, Living on Soul), Marty Bales, Eric Harle, and Dave Tomberlin. The docu’s acquisition was brokered between Greenwich Entertainment’s co-managing director Andy Bohn and 30WEST on behalf of the filmmakers.
Moby Doc will see its domestic release in theaters and streaming services on May 28, 2021.
