‘Gran Turismo’ Footage Presented at CinemaCon

Based on the well-known PlayStation game, Neill Blomkamp’s new film Gran Turismo, of the same name, is set to release on August 11th by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions (The Hollywood Reporter). The film tells the story of Jann Mardenborough – an avid Gran Turismo player. As the teen goes on to master the game, they eventually win numerous Nissan competitions, which leads them to become a professional racecar driver.

While introducing some footage of the film at CinemaCon, Asad Qizilbash, the head of PlayStation Productions, was noted saying that it entails “all the exhilarating aspects of auto racing and the game.” In addition to Qizilbash, stars David Harbour and Orlando Bloom were also there to present the footage. Bloom’s character is said to be Danny – the market lead of Nissan who urges PlayStation to allow his company to host Gran Turismo.

At the recent NAB Show in Las Vegas, a panel went in-depth about the film’s cinematography. DP Jacques Jouffret revealed that they shot with Sony’s Venice 2 cameras to shoot in multiple, tight spaces – such as placing many cameras within the cars. A similar technique was used in Top Gun: Maverick to shoot scenes within the fighter jets.
