Golden Globe Winner Ke Huy Quan Talks Reprising ‘Goonies’ Character

Ke Huy Quan should be getting a multitude of offers after his Golden Globe win for Best Supporting Actor for Everything Everywhere All at Once, fans are asking now more than ever if there will be a Goonies sequel.

Produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by the late Richard Donner, the 1985 cult classic made over $63 million. Although the film wasn’t an instant success when it came out, it has gained a mass following since. The Goonies follows a group of misfits looking for treasure in their seaside town all while being pursued by a family of crooks.

Quan gave insight into the long history of a possible sequel.

“For the last 30-something years we tried to do Goonies 2. I wished it had come to pass when I was young, I thought I would need it to make a career comeback. We had numerous scripts, but not one script that felt that it could live up to the original,” Quan, who played Data in the movie, said Tuesday backstage at the Golden Globes.

“Sadly we lost Dick Donner, the captain of our ship,” Quan continued. “I really don’t know if there will be a Goonies 2, but I’m open to revisiting the character.”

Quan gave a shout-out to Steven Spielberg who was in the audience at the Globes; the filmmaker was the one responsible for giving Quan his acting start in Indiana Jones and the Temple Doom as well as The Goonies. Spielberg won Best Director For a Motion Picture category for The Fabelmans.
