After settling their deal with Legendary Entertainment, Warner Bros has pushed the release date of Godzilla vs. Kong from May 21 to March 26, where it will release simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max. The two studios avoided legal entanglement over Warner Bros’ recent decision to release their entire 2021 slate of films on HBO Max the same time they debut in theaters. Warner also blocked bid of $200 million by Netflix to acquire the newest entry in the MonsterVerse franchise.
The film features the iconic movie monsters Godzilla and Kong duking it out in a battle for the ages. Godzilla vs. Kong is being directed by You’re Next director Adam Wingard with story by Aladdin writer Terry Rossio. It stars powerhouse cast that includes The Legend of Tarzan star Alexander Skarsgård, Enola Holmes’ Millie Bobby Brown and The Prestige actress Rebecca Hall.
The new film reportedly costs $200 million dollars, with 75% of the budget being taken on by Legendary. The last entry in the franchise, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, did better overseas than it did stateside, so some are expecting Godzilla vs. Kong to look for a strong performance in Asian markets.
Warner Bros also recently moved The Sopranos prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark, from March 12 to Sept. 24.
