Herman Mankiewicz is famous figure in the writing industry, once a newspaper, later became known for his screenwriting in the Golden Age of Hollywood. He is best known for such classics as The Wizard of Oz, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and most importantly, Citizen Kane. A feature film is now in production by The Social Network and Fight Club director David Fincher for Netflix that will be titled Mank.
Oscar winning actor Gary Oldman will be set to portray titular character Herman Mankiewicz. This is ideal casting since Oldman is very versatile in his roles, going from great supportive roles like Commissioner Gordon in The Dark Knight, to playing famous historical figures in very faithful ways with Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour.
Add in Fincher, who has a distinctive filmmaking style, and has been very passionate about creating a biopic of Herman since early in his career with 1997’s The Game. Not only that but Fincher’s Father, Jack Fincher, is writing the script for the upcoming biopic.
The film will also be shot in black and white to stay true to the classic Hollywood feel. Not much else has been stated about the film, but it is already clear that audiences will receive a passion project from Fincher about one of the most important names in filmmaking history.
No release date has been set for the film yet.
