Gareth Edwards, who directed Jurassic World: Rebirth, is no longer returning to direct the film’s upcoming follow-up. According to Deadline, Edwards and Universal Pictures have officially parted ways, citing “creative differences” as the reason for Edwards’s departure from the sequel. Deadline also states that Edwards is choosing to instead focus on original projects he has in early development.
As Universal begins early development on this Rebirth follow-up, they are now in search of a new director to take over from Gareth Edwards. Universal also posted a brief statement about Edwards’s departure, which states: “We had an incredible experience working with Gareth on Jurassic World Rebirth.”
Rebirth stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali are all said to be returning for this sequel. David Koepp is also returning to pen the script, having written the most recent draft.
Whoever gets hired to direct this follow-up to Rebirth will be the sixth director to helm a film in the Jurassic Park/World franchise. These other directors include Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park), Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III), Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World, Jurassic World: Dominion), J. A Bayona (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), and Gareth Edwards.
Universal’s search for a new director is ongoing. A planned release date for this Rebirth sequel isn’t yet known.
