While the Flash will star in his own movie, Wonder Woman will appear alongside the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel in Batman vs. Superman. Warner Bros has cast Gal Gadot for the role of the best known superheroine in comic books. Batman vs. Superman will be the first time that Wonder Woman has appeared in a live-action feature film.
The news should provide some relief to fans concerned that Wonder Woman would be marginalized without a film introduction prior to the planned Justice League movie. As mentioned above, Flash will have his own movie prior to Justice League but Wonder Woman will not. In a statement, director Zack Snyder sounded excited both to introduce Wonder Woman to audiences and to work with Gadot, although he did not comment on how significant a role Wonder Woman will play in Batman vs. Superman.
Warner’s choice of Gadot for the role also seems odd considering that she is best known for a supporting role in the Fast and Furious franchise while Ben Affleck (Batman) and Henry Cavill (Superman) are both much more experienced. Also worth mentioning is the last attempt to bring Wonder Woman to live action in the failed television series from 2011. The pilot episode featured an angrier, darker take on the character consistent with the tone set by Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight film trilogy. Man of Steel received criticism for making Superman too dark, so a similar interpretation of Wonder Woman seems ill-advised.
Fans concerned about Gadot’s Wonder Woman may wish to take a closer look at the upcoming Lego movie, which will feature LEGO Wonder Woman voiced by Cobie Smulders (The Avengers).
