Gael García Bernal to Star in Marvel Studios Halloween Special

Several months ago, Disney announced they were looking for a Latino actor in his thirties to star in the Marvel Halloween special that revolves around Werewolf by Night, and will be released on Disney+. Today the search is over: Gael García Bernal has landed the part! The news was confirmed by The Wrap, who also alleged that filming is set to begin in early 2022.

Although details about the synopsis of the special are kept under lock and key, it’s speculated that García Bernal’s character will be based on Werewolf by Night, the name used by two different Marvel characters. The first of these is Jack Russell, famous in Marvel comic strips from 1972 to 1977. The second, Jake Gomez, who appeared in Werewolf by Night (Vol. 3) #1, a Latin American man whose family had been cursed with lycanthropy, the mythological ability to become a werewolf.

As for Jack Russell, the pages of the graphic novel suggest that his character descends from a branch of humans that was mystically altered, for which they receive the designation of Lycanthropes; over time they hone their skills to become werewolves at will without the need for a full moon (as legends dictate).

But if the story is already surprising (although somewhat known), its first issue featured the appearance of Moon Knight, a character that we will see soon in his own exclusive Disney+ series, played by Oscar Isaac. Is Marvel Studios preparing the ground for this pair to join forces in future battles?

Although Gael García Bernal isn’t in his thirties, as the character required, he is a Latin American actor of great relevance within the current entertainment industry. This year he starred in Old for M. Night Shyamalan alongside Thomasin McKenzie (Last Night in Soho), and lends his voice to animated series Maya and the Three, an original Netflix production created by Jorge R. Gutiérrez, a Mexican animator, painter and writer.
