Fox 2000’s ‘The Mountain Between Us’ Courting Idris Elba For Lead Role

Versatile is one of many words one could use when describing British actor Idris Elba. So it comes as no surprise that he is in negotiations for another big screen gig. Fox 2000’s The Mountain Between Us, an adaptation of the Charles Martin novel is aiming to attach Elba in its lead role. The romantic drama follows a man and woman who become stranded after a plane crash and ultimately fall in love.

The original drafts of the script were done by J. Mills Goodloe (Age of Adaline) and Scott Frank (Minority Report). However, the original duo of Charlie Hunnam and Rosamund Pike dropped out from the project leading to a rewrite by Chris Weitz (Cinderella) who recently helped write the screenplay for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Palestinian and Academy Award nominated director Hany Abu-Assad (Omar) has been chosen to direct.

Peter Chernin of Chernin Entertainment, along with Jenno Topping are producing the film. Fox 2000 has Marisa Paiva keeping an eye out for the project which hopes to start shooting early this summer.

Elba is coming off collecting two SAG awards this past January for his supporting role in Beasts of no Nation and another for his leading role as the titular character in the popular television series Luther; this weekend we will find out if Elba will take BAFTA prize for his role in Beasts. He can seen in a slate of movie’s this year such as Star Trek Beyond as well as heard in Finding Dory and The Jungle Book.

The studio is currently searching for a female lead opposite Elba for The Mountain Between Us.
