Forest Whitaker has joined the cast of Marvel’s Black Panther along with Daniel Kaluuya and Florence Kasumba, according to Variety.
Black Panther follows T’Challa, the prince of the African nation of Wakanda, who must take over the throne after his father is murdered. Chadwick Boseman is playing the lead role which was first introduced into the Marvel canon in Captain America: Civil War. Also introduced in that movie was Kasumba’s character Ayo, which she will be reprising for the standalone film. Kaluuya will be playing a confidant of T’Challa’s while Whitaker is filling the role of Zuri, one of Wakanda’s elder statesmen.
Also in the cast is Michael B. Jordan (Creed), Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years Slave), and Danai Gurira (TV’s The Walking Dead). Creed director Ryan Coogler is helming the film that he also co-wrote with Joe Robert Cole (TV’s The People v. O.J. Simpson).
Whitaker will be seen in two major releases before the end of the year. First, in Denis Villenueve’s Arrival starring Amy Adams, and next as shifty rebel fighter Saw Gerrera in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Black Panther is set to hit theaters on February 16, 2018.
