Focus World Acquires TIFF Closer ‘Mr. Right’

Focus World grabbed U.S. distribution rights to oddball romantic comedy Mr. Right, new film featuring Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect) and Sam Rockwell (Moon). Mr. Right made its world premiere this past weekend as the closing night selection of the 2015 Toronto Film Festival. The New Orleans-set film was directed by Paco Cabezas (Neon Flash) and written by Max Landis (American Ultra, Chronicle). James Ransone (Tangerine), RZA (The Next Three Days), Anson Mount (Non-Stop) and Tim Roth (Selma) co-star.

In the movie, Kendrick plays Martha, a lovelorn young woman ready to throw in the towel in regards to her love life. Enter Francis (Rockwell), a neurotic charmer who changes things. Problem is “Mr. Right” is also a hitman who kills the people that attempt to hire him. What’s a girl to do? The film appears cut from the same cloth as Landis’ recently released American Ultra, which paired Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart as stoner romantics unraveled when it’s discovered Eisenberg’s character is a sleeper government agent.

And like American UltraMr. Right hasn’t received a ton of support from critics from it’s TIFF world premiere. The Playlist‘s Nikola Grozdanovic panned the film stating: “A frivolous attitude towards violence, relationships, animals, FBI agents, people in general but women especially, turns Mr. Right into a one-dimensional, lazy, mildly offensive attempt at entertainment and humor.”

Focus World is planning both a theatrical and on-demand run for Mr. Right, yet hasn’t settled on a date.
