Focus Features has debuted the official trailer for Elsinore, director Simon Stone’s (The Dig, The Daughter) biographical drama starring Emmy nominee Andrew Scott as Scottish actor Ian Charleson during his final, defining stage performance. The feature is scheduled for a theatrical release on November 20, 2026.

Written by BAFTA winner Stephen Beresford (Pride), the film chronicles the real-life events of 1989, when Charleson—widely known for his breakthrough role as Olympic athlete Eric Liddell in 1981’s Oscar-winning Chariots of Fire—was tapped to replace Daniel Day-Lewis in the National Theatre’s production of Hamlet. Day-Lewis abruptly walked offstage mid-performance and exited the production entirely, thrusting Charleson into the title role. Despite privately enduring severe, escalating complications from AIDS, Charleson delivered a landmark, critically revered performance at the Olivier Theatre before succumbing to the illness just seven weeks after his final curtain call at age 40.

The ensemble cast includes Academy Award winner Olivia Colman, Billie Piper, Johnny Flynn, Luke Thompson, David Dawson, Matthew Beard, Joe Locke, Monica Dolan, Georgie Glen, Sadie Soverall, Adeel Akhtar, Dickie Beau, Kadiff Kirwan, Juliet Stevenson, and Peter Mullan. Elsinore launched its awards campaign earlier this month with a world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, followed by a screening at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, where it secured the International People’s Choice Award.
