You can add another done deal to the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, as Focus Features has acquired the thriller Cop Car for $2 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie stars Kevin Bacon (TV’s The Following) as a sheriff who sets out to find two kids who have stolen his police car.
The movie has been described as a combination of the Amblin Entertainment adventures of the 1980s and Coen Brothers crime movies. The movie will be distributed through Focus Features’ alternative division Focus World.
Cop Car is written and directed by Jon Watts who is, for all intents and purposes, an unknown entity. His most notable film is last year’s horror movie Clown, which had a very limited release. He also submitted a scene for the crowd-sourced Our RoboCop Remake, in which fans submitted one recreated scene from the original to be edited together as a complete remake.
While Bacon has had some success as a cop on television with The Following, his film work hasn’t found audiences in the same way. His most recent turns have been supporting roles in R.I.P.D, Crazy, Stupid, Love, and X-Men: First Class. He’s also starring in a Whitey Bulger biopic, which will be released this fall.
No release date has been announced for Cop Car. We’ll have more as it’s announced.
