It’s been more than six years since the comedy music group Flight of the Conchords’ HBO show of the same name ended its two-season run, and now comes news that the duo is working on writing a feature film. In an interview with Indiewire, Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows) announced that he is currently writing movie with partner Bret McKenzie (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey).
According to Clement, he and McKenzie have just begun working on a script. Clement said they were planning on starting the script earlier but the project was put on hold while he filmed Steven Spielberg’s (Ready Player One) The BFG, an adaptation of Roald Dahl‘s classic children’s novel. While the duo is currently writing the film, it’s still in very early stages. “Who knows if it will ever be made, we’ve written some notes for some different film ideas. We’re not down to the stage where we’re going, ‘The film is going to be like this,’ it could be this, this, this, this.”
The HBO series, Flight of the Conchords quickly became a cult hit known for its dry humor and featured unofficial music videos for the hit songs “Business Time,” “Most Beautiful Girl in the Room,” “Hip-hopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros,” and “Robots.”
Clement is coming off the success of his vampire mockumentary What We do in The Shadows from earlier this year. He also stars in the recently released comedy People Places Things. The BFG is set to be released July 1, 2016. McKenzie has recently favored behind the scenes work in favor of acting, having written music for The Muppets and its sequel, Muppets Most Wanted.
Since the Flight of the Conchords film project is in early development stages, we’ll be sure to have more information as it becomes available.
