The first trailer has been released online for Jake Gyllenhaal‘s Demolition. The dramedy, also starring Naomi Watts and Chris Cooper (August: Osage County) is slated to open the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday.
Gyllenhaal (Southpaw) plays Davis Mitchell, successful investment banker whose comfortable life is upended when he loses his wife in a major car accident. When a vending machine malfunctions in the hospital only ten minutes after her death, it sets in motion a series of written correspondence between Davis and Karen (Watts, The Impossible), a customer service representative at the vending machine company, who is dealing with her own issues. Davis’ letters get more and more personal as he continues to unravel, but with the support of Karen and her son Chris (newcomer Judah Lewis), Davis is able to start demolishing the life he once thought he knew and try to start healing.
The film was touted as an early awards season favorite, but Fox Searchlight has pushed the official release date to next April 8th, shutting it out from consideration this year.
Demolition is directed by Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club, Wild) from a script by Bryan Sipe. Sipe’s script was featured on the 2007 Blacklist of the most-liked unproduced scripts in Hollywood. Check out the trailer below.
