Just watching the first trailer for Jupiter Ascending, you might have guessed that the movie comes from the writer/director pair as The Matrix and Cloud Atlas. Sci-fi robots? Check. Class warfare? Check. Actors in prostheses? Check. Prophetic words singling out a member of humanity as potential savior? Check.
But just because Jupiter Ascending looks an awful lot like some of the Wachowskis’ previous work doesn’t mean that’s a bad thing. The trailer, which clocks in at about 1:40, shows off Channing Tatum as Caine, a genetically engineered paramilitary hunter who’s out to protect – or possibly kidnap – Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis). Jupiter was born under auspicious astrological signs, but finds her adult self working as a janitor. Sean Bean also is in evidence as Caine’s handler, Stinger, and Terry Gilliam is said to appear in the film in “a small but vital part.”
“It can be difficult for people from underdeveloped worlds to hear that their planet is not the only planet,” says Caine in the trailer. Audiences will have a chance to join this interplanetary community when the film hits theaters July 25, 2014. Until then, check out our previous coverage, or take a gander at the trailer below:
