Lars von Trier‘s upcoming film released its first trailer at Cannes for the bloody thriller The House that Jack Built, and audiences are already squirming in their seats.
The plot of the film follows Jack (Matt Dillon), serial killer who goes above and beyond with his killings, seeing his victims’ murder scenes as artwork. Although there is an obvious connection between “killing and creativity,” as The Hollywood Reporter states in an article, there is also a huge connection between Jack and his need for power over others.
Some of the most upfront, perhaps intentionally so, symbolism comes with jump cuts to b-roll of hungry tigers staring down innocent lambs. It is clear that Jack sees his victims as innocent and easy to destroy.
We obviously do not see all of the exact connections between Jack and his murderous rampages yet, but we do know that we are in for a wild ride as seen through the eyes of von Trier. His choice of music (Fame by the late David Bowie) as well as the aforementioned jump-cuts to b-roll bring us into what feels like an unstable and unpredictable world, presumably similarly to the way Jack’s mind works, that we are ready to sink our teeth into.
Along with Dillion are cast members Uma Thurman, Riley Keough, and Bruno Ganz.
The film is produced by IFC.
