The wait is finally over! The long-awaited Maze Runner: The Death Cure, the series’ third and final installment, is hitting theaters early next year and has released its first trailer. The footage premiered during the series finale of MTV’s Teen Wolf, which stars the Maze Runner frontman Dylan O’Brien.
Production was halted in 2015 after O’Brien suffered a dangerous on-set injury that put him out of commission for 6-months of recovery. The set was shut down and it was unclear for quite a while whether or not the film would finish production at all. O’Brien’s road to recovery was long and he recalled in an EW interview earlier this month that “I really was in a dark place there for a while and it wasn’t an easy journey back.” But, O’Brien is now officially back, and has since completed work on American Assassin, the final season of Teen Wolf, and finally on The Death Cure.
The third film follows Thomas (O’Brien) in the wake of his dangerous confrontation with the WCKD organization in The Scorch Trials. He must lead himself and The Gladers into The Last City to take down their enemy once and for all. The journey will not be easy, though, as they must traverse a risky maze of traps in the city’s labyrinth. On the way, they search for the cure to the disease known as “The Flare” and search for the answers to the questions that put them in The Maze at the start of the series.
The film is directed by series helmer Wes Ball and also stars Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Rosa Salazar, Katherine McNamara (TV’s Shadowhunters), Nathalie Emmanuel (HBO’s Game of Thrones), Patricia Clarkson, Giancarlo Esposito (Netflix’s Daredevil), Barry Pepper (True Grit), and Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight).
Maze Runner: The Death Cure hits theaters on January 26, 2018. Check out the trailer below.
