First Trailer for ‘Mapplethorpe’ Starring Matt Smith

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming biopic about notorious photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. The film stars Matt Smith as the titular character with Marianne Rendón as Patti Smith.

The film follows Mapplethorpe’s rise to fame in New York City in the 1970s as he makes a name for himself as a provocative, fearless photographer. He and Smith create the ideal bohemian lifestyle and photograph the delirium surrounding them. In a sea of artists, musicians, actors, and members of the S&M community, he captures these unique individuals on film and throws himself into tumultuous relationships. An urge for self-destruction, his struggle with AIDS, and backlash from the public towards his art and his sexuality lead him to a rapid downward spiral.

Matt Smith is known for The Crown and Doctor Who and will also make an appearance in Star Wars Episode IX in 2019.

Director, writer, and producer Ondi Timoner has earned much recognition for her documentaries and has won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance twice for her films Dig! And We Live in Public. Mapplethorpe marks her first foray into scripted film and is scheduled for release on March 1, 2019.
