It’s undeniable that one of the most recognizable films of the 1980s is Ghostbusters. Fans of the series have been a bit underwhelmed, not to mention toxically divided, over the 2016 reboot film that, while well received by critics, failed to have the same impact as the 1984 original. Now Sony Pictures has released the trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, offering a legacy follow up that likely should have been the gameplan following Harold Ramis’ death.
The trailer introduces us to two kids moving into a new town, played by Mckenna Grace (Captain Marvel) and Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things). They’ve inherited a new home from their late grandfather, but it’s filled with paranormal activity. They then learn about their family’s ties to the original Ghostbusters team via the discovery many of the iconic props like the proton packs and ghost traps.
Ghost hunting enthusiast Mr. Grooberson, played by Paul Rudd, geeks out over their finds as he investigates the town’s strange paranormal events. Continuing with Bill Murray audio from the first film and more strange occurrences across town, including a potential encounter with Zuul, the trailer ends with the kids driving the Ecto-1 car and trying to catch a ghosts in classic Ghostbusters fashion.
This trailer is taking a page from the recent Star Wars trailers: not too much is shown, yet the mystery still manages to intrigue fans. It gives a basic plot understanding while also providing a few nods to the original film. Some fans may feel that the trailer’s tone is a bit too serious for something like Ghostbusters, but it’s likely that more humor will be incorporated in future trailers. Surprisingly, little of the trailer features any of the original cast or ghosts outside of a few hints. But again, the final film will definitely showcase that. Until then, fans have a lot to look forward to with this new Ghostbusters film coming next summer.
