20th Century Fox has released the first official trailer for the next installment in the Alien franchise, Alien: Covenant, the sequel to Prometheus. The film follows a crew of couples journeying to colonize an uncharted planet on the other side of our galaxy. They believe they’ve discovered a paradise, but upon finding vegetation from our planet and a complete lack of wild life they begin to grow suspicious. From there it’s pretty easy to guess what happens next, but incase you’ve never heard of any of the Alien films: Various aliens begin to hunt and slaughter the crew.
After watching this, the teaser, and the “Prologue: Last Supper” it’s difficult to get a sense of the quality of the film. However, what seems clear is that it will deliver more of the same suspense and action that we love. But is that a good thing? The inclusion of a wise-cracking, cowboy hat wearing, funny man named Tennessee makes one wonder how many other played-out 90’s sci-fi/action clichés we’ll be forced to see in the film. To be fair, it must be incredibly difficult to offer audiences something new when producing the sixth installment in a series of films. Perhaps the plot alone will give us enough of something new, seeing as it focuses on events that lead up to the first Alien.
This will have been Ridley Scott‘s third time directing another addition in the series. Dante Harper and John Logan have penned the screenplay. The film will star Prometheus alumni, Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace, along with slew of newcomers including James Franco and DannyMcBride. Alien: Covenant hits theaters on May 19th, watch the trailer below.
