NEON has released the first image of Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in the upcoming film Spencer. Jackie director Pablo Larraín is at the helm, while Steven Knight(Peaky Blinders, Locked Down) penned the script. In addition to production starting this week, the film has added Timothy Spall, Sally Hawkins, and Sean Harris.
The film is underway in Germany, while the story follows Diana over three days in the early 90’s where she decides to part with her partner, Prince Charles. The film looks to be a character study similar to Larraín and Knight’s earlier work. While the two have never worked together, much of their high profile work focuses on character’s in tough situations. Whether that be a grieve-stricken Jackie Kennedy or an unravelling Ivan Locke, the two seem perfect to work together.
In addition to Stewart, three high profile actors have joined the film. Timothy Spall, best known for his role as Wormtail in the Harry Potter franchise, is one of the most underrated actor’s working and can certainly add a certain gravitas to any project he boards.
Sally Hawkins is just wonderful in everything she does, whether that be playing a mute janitor in The Shape of Water or the loving matriarchy in the delightful Paddington films. Lastly, Sean Harris is also joining the cast, best known for his role in the Mission Impossible franchise. These English actors all add something to the film, and will certainly ease English viewers into the idea of an American portraying Diana Spencer.
Spencer has started filming and is expected at some point in late 2021.
