According to IndieWire, Hulu has shared its first look into its newest rom-com Fire Island. Bowen Yang, Zane Phillips, James Scully, Matt Rogers, Tomas Matos, Torian Miller, and Margret Cho all star in the film from Fox Searchlight. Fire Island is a gay-centric romantic comedy surrounding a group of friends who embark on a week-long vacation filled with hook-ups, immorality, and moments that will make or break their friendships. The film is from screenwriter Joel Kim Booster, who also stars, and will be directed by Andrew Ahn from Spa Nights.
The film will premiere on Hulu. Booster revealed that the film was originally supposed to premiere in 2020 on a short-lived streaming platform, Quibi, that specialized in “quick bites” of entertainment. In fact, the film was inspired by another miniseries, the BBC adaption of Pride and Prejudice which Booster used to watch with his mother. Jane Austen’s novel of the same name was the cornerstone for Fire Island as well as the 1995 classic Clueless. Booster also states that the Jane Austen interpretation addresses head-on intersections between race, class, and dating as a friend group who is vacationing together. As he described the plot: “What happens when gay men are put together on an island and there are no straight people to oppress us? How do we oppress each other?” Fire Island premieres on June 3rd, only on Hulu.
