The photo featured above is the first official image out of Berlin for the Ian McEwan adaptation On Chesil Beach. The film stars Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) and Billy Howle (The Sense of an Ending) as a young couple on their honeymoon in the 1960s.
The novel, from the Atonement author, follows Florence Ponting and Edward Mayhew as they are spending their honeymoon at a small hotel at the Dorset shore, on Chesil Beach. The remaining story progresses over the course of a single evening during which the two very different lovers reflect together on their future and sexual intimacies. McEwan adapted his novel for the screen.
Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves), Ann-Marie Duff (Suffragette), and Samuel West (Van Helsing) also star in the film directed by Dominic Cooke as his feature debut. Rocket Science is currently shopping the book for distribution at the Berlin Film Festival.
Ronan formerly appeared in another of McEwan’s adaptations, Atonement. This will also be the Ronan’s second period piece outing in a row after her Oscar-nominated turn in Brooklyn. She and breakout Billy Howle will also be appearing together again soon in the Chekhov adaptation The Seagull.
