New stills have emerged, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, revealing images of the cast of renowned filmmaker Ava DuVernay’s upcoming project, A Wrinkle in Time. While A Wrinkle in Time received an admittedly lackluster film in 2003, it seems like DuVernay (Selma) is bringing a fresh and important take to the story. Many are hopeful that her film will finally bring an impressive counterpart to the Newberry Medal-winning book by Madeleine L’Engle. A Wrinkle in Time is the first of several books in the series (known as the Time Quintet) by L’Engle, several of which involve time travel, as well as a thoughtful synthesis of religion and science.
The film boasts an impressive cast, with members such as Gugu-Mbatha Raw (Black Mirror), Oprah Winfrey (The Butler), Mindy Kaling (Inside Out), Chris Pine (Wonder Woman), and Reese Witherspoon (Wild). Actress Storm Reid (Sleight) will be playing the lead, a young girl named Meg Murry who, with the help of her brother Charles Wallace (played by Deric McCabe) and three mysterious yet eccentric characters played by Winfrey, Kaling, and Witherspoon, embarks her on a perilous journey to find her missing father. While both of Meg’s parents are scientists, her father’s particular field of study and subsequent experiment have landed him a situation which seems inescapable. However, Meg does not take her responsibility lightly, leaving her world for other ones. Described as a “force” by DuVernay, Reid seems like a perfect choice for the heroine.
DuVernay, too, seems like a perfect choice of director. With her casting choices and thoughtful dissection of gender, race, and intersectionality in science fiction, it looks like her work on the film will almost certainly do justice to the source material, if not elevate it to commentary above the original. However, excited fans still have a bit to wait, as the film will not appear on screens until March 9, 2018.
