The first teaser for DC Studios upcoming Clayface is here and gives us not only our first look at Clayface, but a first look at the DCU’s Gotham City.  The tagline being used for the film is “Look Fear In The Face”.

The main focus of the teaser is Matt Hagen/Clayface (Tom Rhys Harries), with his face a bloody mess as he lies bandaged up in a hospital bed.  There are cuts back and forth to past and present, giving a glimpse of Hagen before and after he was mutilated and tested upon to become Clayface.  Testing being done on Hagen that is flashed is his face being cut with a scalpel and some sort of injection being shot into his eye.  The footage also flashes Hagen’s life as a Hollywood actor, depicting the fall from grace he will likely struggle with in the film.  Multiple shots of Gotham City are also shown, offering audiences the first glimpse at the home of the uncast Caped Crusader of the DCU.  With Matt Reeves’ The Batman set as an Elseworlds story, Reeves’ universe will act as a separate entity to the DC Universe James Gunn is constructing.

The final shot of the teaser shows Clayface lying in a bathtub, before pulling an extra layer of skin fully over his face.  Clayface is expected to be a true swing at a horror film for the DCU, mainly focusing on body-horror.  According to Deadline, the character first appeared in “Detective Comics #40 in June 1940”.  Alongside Tom Rhys Harries, the cast will include: Naomi Acke, David Dencik, Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, Nancy Carroll, Joshua James, and Will Coban.  Behind the camera is James Watkins, a director familiar with the horror genre as he directed 2008’s Eden Lake and 2024’s Speak No Evil.  Producing will be James Gunn, Peter Safran, Matt Reeves, and Lynn Harris, with Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini penning the script.

James Gunn has revealed that Clayface will be  the first film in the canon chronological order for the DCU, taking place before Superman.  Another major question is if Harries’ Clayface will be the same iteration of the character fans met in 2024’s Creature Commandos.  For the DCU, the next film on the slate is Supergirl, who will be played by Molly Alcock, with the film set for release on June 26.  Clayface will hit theaters later this year on October 23.  The full teaser can be viewed below.
