The Japanese sci-fi fantasy film From the End of the World has been given this year’s Fantasporto’s Best Film Award. The genre film festival runs in Porto, Portugal from March 1-10. Directed by Kazuaki Kiriya, the film follows Hana, a 10-year-old girl, whose dreams can take her across different eras of Japan’s history and give her the ability to save the human race itself.
Italian director Fabio D’Orta’s sci-fi horror debut feature, The Complex Forms, won the Jury’s special award. The film follows a man who has sold his body to be possessed by an unknown entity.
Winning the prize for Best Direction is Spanish filmmaker Gonzalo López-Gallego for his horror film The Shadow of the Shark (La Sombra del Tiburon). In this film, a young woman cannot fall asleep and finds out that malevolent forces are attacking her home at night with the help of surveillance cameras.
Tovino Thomas took the Best Actor award for the fantasy-drama film Invisible Windows directed by Dr. Biju of India. Taking the Best Actress award is Eve Ringuette for her role in the debut comedy horror film by Canada’s Kevin T. Landry, Jour de Merde.
