Back when the original trailer for the Detective Pikachu video game was released, fans were intrigued by the idea of a Pikachu that could speak. Either ironically or sincerely, a lot of Pokemon fans wanted Danny DeVito to voice the game’s titular Pikachu. One Youtuber even edited the game’s trailer and added voice clips of Danny DeVito from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Batman Returns. This video became extremely popular so when it was announced that there would be a Detective Pikachu movie, there was a major push to have Danny DeVito star in the movie.
While it was eventually revealed that Ryan Reynolds would be playing the movie’s Pokemon, the filmmakers revealed that they had been listening to fans. According to Nerdist, some of the film’s crew admitted that they tried to fulfill the fans’ requests and have DeVito play Pikachu. Apparently, during production, the filmmakers were testing out several different voices for Pikachu, one of which was Danny DeVito’s.
Unfortunately, DeVito’s voice just didn’t fit the character, and Reynolds was chosen instead. DeVito may not be playing Pikachu but it is still nice to know that the filmmakers were listening to the fans.
