The next two sequels to The LEGO Movie have release dates. According to a recent report from Hollywood Reporter, the second will debut May 25, 2018, followed by a third on May 24, 2019.
We have previously reported that Emmy winning Chris McKay (Robot Chicken) is directing The LEGO Movie 2, which will be written by Michelle Morgan and Jared Stern. The original’s directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, are still attached to the franchise, but this time as producers. The filmmakers attached to the third are yet to be revealed.
The LEGO Movie earned $70 million at the box office, opening weekend and $468 million worldwide. It was monumental for the animation devision of Warner Brothers, considering their previous animation, Happy Feet Two (2011) was a box office disaster.
Before the next two LEGO Movies, we have Charlie Bean’s (storyboard artist for The Powderpuff Girls) spinoff, Ninjago to look forward to. Tim Falkenberg noted that Ninjago should hit theaters September 23, 2016. Phil Lord and Chris Miller are also producing, while Dan and Kevin Hageman (creators of the story for The LEGO Movie) are writing this action-packed ninja lego picture.
Since the imaginary world was revealed, the franchise has no predictable direction to take. Most of the original cast, which includes Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Liam Neeson, and Morgan Freeman, will likely come back to play legos.
