Epic Games Will Create Animated Movie Based on the Gilgamesh Myth

The American video game company Epic Games will be funding an animated feature film. Epic Games is of course the video game company that created the popular Gears of War franchise and Fortnite. According to Comic Book Resources the movie that Epic Games will be making is going to be based off of the Epic of Gilgamesh.

The Epic of Gilgamesh is ancient Mesopotamian epic poem, and it is literally one of the oldest surviving stories to have ever been written. There are many versions of this story with the oldest one dating back to 2100 BCE. The plot of the poem is about Gilgamesh, who might have actually been a real life king, and is told on twelve carved tablets. Gilgamesh is a corrupt and harsh ruler so the gods send a wild man named Enkidu to stop him. Enkidu befriends Gilgamesh and the two go on adventures together until Enkidu is killed. Gilgamesh then spends the rest of the poem searching for eternal life, but he discovers the Great Flood instead.

Epic Games will be using their Unreal Engine to develop the movie. Since its creation the Unreal Engine has been used to create countless mainstream video games like BioShockRuneDeus Ex, the Batman: Arkham video games, and Borderlands. It has also been used on movies like the recent remake of The Lion King.
