Emma Stone Slips on the Fur Coat of Cruella de Vil in Disney Prequel ‘Cruella’

It looks like Maleficent won’t be the only Disney villainess getting her own live action prequel, because Disney has just announced plans for an upcoming movie starring the fearsome fur fashionista Cruella de Vil. This new movie, based naturally on the 1961 animated movie 101 Dalmatians, will simply be titled Cruella.

It has also been revealed that actress Emma Stone will be slipping on the oversized coat of evil. Stone has been in talks to play Cruella since 2018, but this time the deal has finally been confirmed. Stone is probably best known for her Oscar winning in 2016’s La La Land, as well as other movie roles like Birdman and The Favourite. It will be interesting to see an actress like Stone playing the fur obsessed puppy killer, especially since, as someone in her thirties, it’s a little odd that Disney would cast her as a character often depicted as being older.

This new Cruella movie will not actually be the first live action adaptation of 101 Dalmatians. In fact, Disney already made made a live action film titled 101 Dalmatians, which starred actress Glen Close as Cruella de Vil. Close would later reprise her role in the sequel, 102 Dalmatians.

Originally Alex Timbers was chosen to direct Cruella, but he ultimately left the project and now Craig Gillespie, who directed I, Tonya, will be serving as the director. Cruella is expected to come out in spring of 2021.
