Emily Blunt Says ‘Fantastic 4’ Rumors Are “Fan Casting”

This week Emily Blunt(A Quiet Place, Mary Poppins Returns) was on the Howard Stern Show, where she discussed her career now that A Quiet Place 2 is finally approaching its long delayed release. The most interesting part of the interview for Marvel lovers came when Stern asked the Golden Globe Winner about the rumors that she will play Sue Storm in the Marvel’s upcoming Fantastic 4 film.

Stern, a self proclaimed Fantastic 4 fan, asked Blunt if the rumors were true. She immediately declines saying, “No that is fan casting, no one has received a phone call.”

Blunt is no stranger to the MCU, she was offered the role of Natasha Romanoff in Iron Man 2, but ended up declining the part. Stern goes on to ask if all the superhero movies were beneath her as an actor, in which she responded saying, “It’s not that it’s beneath me.” Continuing, ” I don’t know if superheroes are for me,” and “We are inundated. It’s not that it’s only the movies, it’s the endless TV shows as well.”

Which is not completely incorrect. Superhero movies have become the modern western, and are a bit oversaturated in the market. It’s not just Marvel and DC, but shows like The Boys and Invincible playing on the genre, while also being a part of the genre.

Blunt goes back on her comments a tad stating, “it’s not to say that I would never want to play one. It would just have to be something so cool and like a really cool character and then I’d be interest. In general, I don’t race to see superhero movies. Maybe because they leave me feeling a little bit cold. I can’t explain it. I can’t get in there.”

It feels like a genuine conversation about the state of the genre, and while this could all be an act, maybe there is something to be said for an actor that is confident they cannot “get in there” and flesh out a superhero role. This is only made more difficult because, for the most part, superhero acting is mainly in front of a green screen.

However, Marvel is actively looking for the cast for the Fantastic 4, and while Blunt and her husband John Krasinski would be great as half of the duo, perhaps those rumors and wishes are simply fan casts for now.
