Emerald Fennell of ‘Promisng Young Woman’ Sets Next Film at MCR, Plans Summer Shoot

According to Variety, Emerald Fennell, Academy Award winner for the best original screenplay with Promising Young Woman, has set up her next project. The plot details of this next film are being kept under wraps, it is said to surround a story of obsession.

MCR Films is the studio behind the project, and LuckyChap Entertainment, who produced Promising Young Woman, is in talks to produce her next project as well. Promising Young Woman received five Oscar nominations for best picture, director, actress, for Carey Mulligan’s performance, editing by Frédéric Thoraval, and original screenplay which Fennell won.

Fennell is currently meeting with actors to cast for the film, which details at this point remain top secret, but filming is said to begin this summer.

Fennell is set to direct, write, and produce the film just as she did with Promising Young Woman.

When speaking with Variety in December of 2020, Fennell stated that she had decided to direct after she began “screenwriting in earnest” and sought to be able to “deliver that world, and make it fully realized.”

Being a multi-skilled talent behind the camera isn’t Fennell’s only strong suit. She also was nominated for best supporting actress at the Emmys last year for her role as Camilla Parker-Bowles in season 4 of The Crown. As a part of a Netflix series, she also received a Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance by an ensemble drama.

Since her Oscar’s victory last spring, Fennell’s contemporary version of a Cinderella musical with Andrew Lloyd Webber opened on the West End in August. She is also developing an anthology series for Showtime with Stoller Global Solutions and Sony TV.
