Ellar Coltrane – formerly Ellar Salmon – (Boyhood) has joined the adaptation of the Dave Eggers sci-fi novel The Circle, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film will follow woman (Emma Watson, The Perks of Being a Wallflower) who rises through the ranks of a tech company seeking to eliminate the idea of a right to privacy and open up people’s lives with their products. Coltrane will play Watson’s ex-boyfriend who attempts to avoid detection from the company.
This will be Coltrane’s first role since Boyhood was released in 2014. His only other work has been in small roles in films including Fast Food Nation, Faith & Bullets and Lonestar State of Mind. While Boyhood was one of the most critically acclaimed movies of 2014, some moviegoers questioned Coltrane’s acting talent. This film will give him a chance to potentialy show off his abilities without the nature of the project looming over him.
James Ponsoldt (The End of the Tour) is directing the The Circle. Coltrane joins an impressive cast that, along with Watson, includes Karen Gillan (TV’s Doctor Who), Tom Hanks (Bridge of Spies), John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Patton Oswalt (Young Adult) and Bill Paxton (Nightcrawler). Coltrane has no other upcoming projects.
The Circle is set for a 2016 release. We will have more information on the film as it becomes available.
