In Sony’s recent run of movies based off of Spider-Man villains, they confirmed one was in the works for newer rival of the web-slinger, El Muerto, but the film was recently pulled from their calendar of upcoming releases.
El Muerto himself is an antihero in the comics, and the son of a Mexican wrestler. Rap artist Bad Bunny was lined up to portray the character, leading the first Marvel film to have Latino role. Taking up the mantle of director is son of Alfonso Cuarón, Jonás Cuarón, and the movie was slated for a January 12th, 2024 release date.
Deadline reports that the project is next in the line of casualties for the ongoing writers strike, with the script itself needing additional work, but not being able to receive it. On top of the writers strike playing heavy hand in removing the date, there were a multitude of other factors that lead them to this point. Bad Bunny himself had a touring schedule that would conflict with the filming, putting his own casting into question, as well as the film hasn’t been fully casted yet. A couple talents have been circled, including Marvin Jones III for the role of crime-boss Tombstone, who also played the character in 2018’s Into The Spider-Verse.
With El Muerto going on hold, Sony has also made some slight adjustments to their film schedule. Dumb Money is now moved up from October 30th to September 22nd, and The Book Of Clarence is moved from September 22nd to January 12th, 2024.
