The Saw franchise, which has remained a prominent title in the horror genre since 2004, can be viewed in a number of ways. To some, it’s a twisted narrative centered around the Jigsaw killer’s outlook on life, testing his victims with death traps in order to determine the strength of their desire to live. To others, the franchise is a rather disturbing and gratuitous maze of torture scenarios with a plot surrounding them, its numerous sequels pushing it down the tragic path of other horror franchises. Either way, for all its mixed to negative reception over the years, Saw has remained commercially successful at the box office and stands as one of the highest grossing horror franchises of all time.
Now, the upcoming eighth film in the Saw, being released seven years after the last entry, has received it’s official title: Jigsaw. Originally titled Saw: Legacy, this new title was announced through the series’ official Twitter account, and is reference to the nickname of primary antagonist Jigsaw, i.e. civil engineer turned serial killer John Kramer (Tobin Bell). One could assume this new title hints that the film will be taking another look into Jigsaw/Kramer’s pre-killer life, seeing as how the character died in Saw III released way back in 2006. However, given that Bell made a promotion of sorts for the film back in May with one of his tweets, it’s possible that he could show up for a cameo or dominant role in the film.
Jigsaw is to be directed by Michael and Peter Spierig, whose previous works include 2003’s Undead and 2009’s Daybreakers, the former receiving negative reception and the latter being mixed to positive. The script will be written by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, who are best know for the script of Piranha 3D, a loose remake of the original 1978 film. The film is set for a theatrical release on October 27, 2017.
