Dwayne Johnson Announces Release Date for ‘Black Adam’

With DC’s ever growing line up of films, many fans have been curious about whether or not Dwayne Johnson will finally make an appearance in the cinematic universe. A film featuring the character of Black Adam with Johnson set to play the character has been rumored for quite some time now and was recently confirmed to go into production. Now the film seems closer than expected as Johnson share some artwork of him as the character on his Instagram page with a December 22nd, 2021 release date.

The character of Black Adam is known to be a villain in the comics as a rival to Shazam. However, the way Johnson describes the character is as more of an anti-hero than a villain. Johnson’s Instagram post also discussed how he was a huge fan of the character of Superman ever since he was a kid, but felt he couldn’t see himself in that character. He described himself as too rebellious and resistant to authority to take on a role of Superman. Therefore, him taking on the role of Black Adam seem more fitting as the character takes a much more aggressive and rebellious style than someone like Superman. Johnson mentions that, “He’s a rebellious, one of a kind superhero, who’ll always do what’s right for the people but he does it his way. Truth and justice – the BLACK ADAM way”.  With the more anti-hero direction for the character, it’s unknown as to whether or not Shazam will make an appearance following his film debut from earlier this year.

The December 2021 release date is an indication that DC wants to recreate the success of Aquaman which was release in December of 2018 and made a billion dollars worldwide. However, Black Adam will have some competition this time around with Avatar 2 set for December 17th 2021 release date. Though given the success of some of DC’s more recent films and the popularity of Johnson’s acting career, Black Adam could still end up becoming a huge success. Not only that but 2021 is set to be a huge year for DC as they also have both Matt Reeves’ The Batman and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad set for a summer release of that year. Regardless of how successful Black Adam will be compared to the other two films, DC is still expected to have a huge year once 2021 comes around.
