With an always busy and high-profile agenda, action star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has just added another major role to his schedule for 2020. After over a decade of pushing for the project, Johnson has announced that Warner Brothers is moving ahead with the production of Black Adam in 2020, of which he will be playing the titular role.
Black Adam is a DC comics antihero who is known for being the rival of superhero Shazam and has origins in Egyptian mythology. In the comics he has very similar powers to Shazam, but is more mature and has alternative motives. He aims to eliminate injustice and oppression in the world, but does not adhere to typical moral standards in the process.
The film has been confirmed after the success, both critical and financial, of 2018’s Shazam! starring Zachary Levi. The film earned $363 million worldwide, marking a clear interest in the characters and more comedic routes of DC. A sequel is already in the works, but does not yet have a confirmed timeline.
Black Adam is slated to start production in July 2020, as announced in the tweet below. Johnson’s upcoming projects include Jumanji: The Next Level and Disney’s Jungle Cruise. He was recently seen in Hobbs & Shaw and TV series Ballers.
