‘Dune’s Jon Spaihts Joins Netflix’s ‘Gears Of War’ As Screenwriter

Netflix has announced Jon Spaights, writer of Prometheus (2012), Doctor Strange (2016), and Dune (2021), will be writing the Gears Of War movie.

The first Gears of War game was released in 2006 for Xbox 360. It is a third-person shooter following a squad of soldiers defending humanity on the planet Sera from The Locust. In November, it was announced that Netflix would partner with The Coalition to adapt the video game saga into a movie alongside an adult animated show.

Gears of War is one of the all-time great action games,” Spaights said in a statement to Variety, “with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates. It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”

“We’re thrilled to partner with Jon and the Netflix team to bring Gears of War to life,” The Coalition said. “Jon is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic, science-fiction universes, and he truly loves Gears of War. We couldn’t ask for a better partner to honor our franchise and deliver an authentic story to our fans.”
