Tim Burton’s live-action Dumbo is now projected to fly to as high as $58 million opening weekend. The film looks to contribute to Disney’s recent domination of the domestic and international box offices. Along with Dumbo’s impressive projections, the studio continues to crush competition as Captain Marvel is poised for a heroic $160 million opening weekend. Disney’s 2019 lineup also includes Avengers Endgame (April 24), Aladdin (May 22), Toy Story 4 (June 20), The Lion King (July 17), Frozen 2 (November 21), and Star Wars: Episode IX (December 18).
Loosely inspired by the 1941 animated feature, Burton’s Dumbo stars Danny DeVito as the owner and ringmaster of struggling circus. Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) and his family are hired to take care of the laughingstock of the circus, Dumbo the elephant. The Farrier family and Dumbo use the elephant’s extraordinary gifts to save the circus. However, after the circus plans a new venture, Dumbo and his friends discover dark secrets beneath its shiny veneer.
Burton looks to recreate the box office success of his live-action remake of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. Alice grossed over $1 billion in the global box office and currently stands as Burton’s most fiscally successful film. While it seems unlikely Dumbo will soar as high as Alice, the world’s most famous flying elephant is still projected to stand as one of the director’s most profitable projects.
Dumbo is set to fly into domestic theaters on March 29. This news was first reported by Variety.
