Ryusuke’s Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car won Best International Feature at the Oscars tonight. This is Japan’s first win in the category since 2008’s Departures from Yōjirō Takita. Drive My Car is inspired by Haruki Murakami’s novel of the same name. The film’s synopsis is as follows:
“An aging, widowed actor seeks a chauffeur. The actor turns to his go-to mechanic, who ends up recommending a 20-year-old girl. Despite their initial misgivings, a very special relationship develops between the two.”
Drive My Car is also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture. Stay tuned to find out if the film will follow Parasite’s footsteps, which was the first non-English-language film to win Best Picture.
The Oscars are live now on ABC!
