In the final weekend of January, which is usually the slowest time for movie theaters, Dreamworks Animation’s newest film, Dog Man, had a strong domestic debut. The animated film, based on the bestselling Scholastic book series written by Captain Underpants author Dav Pilkey, opened at #1 at the domestic box office, making $36 million, and making it the 2nd highest-grossing 2025 release in the domestic box office behind Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. Companion, the romantic thriller starring Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid, opened at #2 in the domestic box office, making $9.3 million.

Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, continued to hold strong at the domestic box office, making #6.3 million in its seventh weekend in theaters, placing it at #3, and putting its total domestic gross at $230 million. At #4 was the comedy One of Them Days, which made $5.8 million, making its domestic total $35 million, and at #5 was the Mel Gibson-directed and Mark Whalberg-led thriller, Flight Risk, which made $5.4 million, making its domestic total just over $20 million.

Other films in the domestic top ten include Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at #6, which made $3.2 million, and Moana 2 at #7, which added #2.8 million to its domestic total, with the film now standing at a whopping $1.03 billion globally. At #8 was A Complete Unkown, making $2.3 million, and at #9 was The Brutalist, which, despite expanding to over 400 more theaters, only made $1.8 million. Finally at #10 was Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, which made $1.5 million, though, as stated, it is still currently the highest-grossing 2025 release domestically.

This upcoming weekend should be a steady one, with the main two wide releases being the Ke Huy Quan-led action-comedy Love Hurts and the Valentine’s Day-themed horror/slasher Heart Eyes. The following weekend should pick up substantially with the release of Marvel Studio’s Captain America: Brave New World.
