In a deal reportedly worth around seven figures, Disney has won the auction for the film rights to the bestselling book series, “Impossible Creatures.” Disney ultimately emerged victorious over the other finalists, which included Warner Bros. and Netflix. Katherine Rundell, the author of the Impossible Creatures book series, is said to be adapting the first two books, titled “Impossible Creatures” and “The Poisoned King“, into screenplays.
The main reason the rights to the book series were such a hot ticket item was due to the series’ immense success. The series is one of the biggest successes in young adult literature in quite a long time, with its success being compared to that of the Harry Potter and Hunger Games book series. Both currently published books in the Impossible Creatures book series have reached the number one spot on the children’s book sales charts in both the U.S. and the U.K. Together, the two books have sold approximately 4 million copies.
The book series follows a boy named Christopher, who discovers the secret entrance to a magical fantasy world filled with magical creatures, known as the Gilmouria Archipelago. The series follows Christopher, along with a young girl named Mal, who lives in the Gilmouria Archipelago, as they attempt to protect the magical creatures around them that are suffering from a decline in the magical force that sustains them.
Along with the book rights, Katherine Rundell and her creative partner Charles Collier have also entered a “first-look” deal through the production company Impossible Films, which is located in London and whose creative team includes Paddington 2 and Wonka producer Alexandra Derbyshire, and former Pixar CFO and Fox President of Studio Operations Simon Bax.
No other details about Disney’s film adaptations, including production or release information, are currently known.
