Disney has earned $2,491.4M athe domestic box office, setting a new industry record. The Walt Disney Company topped the previous record of $2.45B which Universal increased in 2015. Overseas, Disney has crossed the $4 billion mark for the first time with $4,079.5M beating Universal who was the first studio ever to cross $4B and ending the year at $4.44B.
Thanks to Disney’s animated and superhero powerhouses, has accumulated $6,570.9M to date. Moana has only just begun globally ($177.4M to date), while Rogue One: A Star Wars Story awaits time to shine with an international roll-out beginning on December 14th. Universal currently holds The worldwide box office record closing out 2015 with $6.89B. Disney’s unprecedented success comes with amassed power of just their mighty in-houses titles, but also those coming from the Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm arms of their brand.
Also helping push the power-mouse Disney is Marvel’s Doctor Strange. Last week the film passed the $600M worldwide mark adding $10.2M worldwide ($6.5M domestic/$3.7M intl). This session, Doctor Strange surpassed Thor: The Dark World ($206M) in domestic totals and internationally beat Deadpool ($419.5M) and is expected to pass Suicide Squad ($420.5M) shortly. Other major titles Disney has this past year include; Captain America: Civil War ($1.153B WW), Finding Dory ($1.027B WW), Zootopia ($1.024B WW) and The Jungle Book ($967M WW).
In just ten days, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will begin its release, kicking off in France and others on December 14, followed by Brazil, Germany, the UK, Mexico, Russia and more on the 15th and Japan and North America on December 16.
